"I've loved you since I can't remember when, and I'm going to love you until I can't forget how."
—Toby to Happy

Dr. Tobias "Toby" Merriweather Curtis (b.1982) is the husband of Happy Quinn, and a member of Team Scorpion. He is a psychiatric and medical prodigy.

BiographyEdit

Early LifeEdit

His mother was clinically bipolar, and his dad often forgot he was there because Toby's mom's disorder drove him crazy. Toby decided to become a psychiatrist to help his parents. His father would also take him to tracks on Christmas Day, and later to pay for school Toby began to gamble, which often led to an addiction and trouble with loan sharks. His fiancee left him because of his addiction. He received his doctorate when he was seventeen.

He met Walter at the Cornet Room, a sleazy casino he hustled at. Walter intervened and bailed him out, just as he was about to receive a beating from the pit boss

Season OneEdit

PilotEdit

Toby rushes into the garage and tells Happy, Sylvester, and Walter to be quiet, and soon the thugs that were chasing him begin banging on the door. Cabe scares off the thugs with his Homeland badge, and asks Scorpion, specifically Walter, for help. Walter agrees, and the team head to the LAX airport to help. However, traffic causes Walter to send them to the diner where he just fixed the wifi at, and from there Toby and Happy are sent to the data center to retrieve the uncorrupted code so they can send it to the airport and the planes.

Happy breaks them into the center, and Toby correctly figures out where the disc is using his profiling skills. However, on the way back, he stored it in the door so the disc is wiped clean. After Walter and Paige get the code to one of the planes, Toby, along with the rest of the team, accepts both the money and the job offered by Cabe.

FracturedEdit

After getting into another argument with Walter, he and Walter are ordered by Paige to attend "couples therapy". The therapist is eccentric and both Toby and Walter are uncomfortable and make little progress, when an earthquake hits. Toby and Walter rush outside, and witness two water hydrants be shot into the air by water, due to the pressure. Walter figures out that the water pipes must be pinched, and that since the water lines are pinched, and the gas ones run parallel, the gas ones must be pinched at well. Which means the gas pressure is building up under Koreatown. Sylvester and Ralph are assigned to go shut off the pipes, while Walter and Toby go to vent the pipes. Because everyone and everything is in panic and chaos, Walter decides they will go underground.

However, a group of ants have made a raft over the hatch they need to go down, and Toby uses a pack of honey in his pocket to move the ants. A little later, they come upon a cave in where rocks are blocking the corridor. Walter tells Toby which rocks to move, while he apologizes for arguing with him. They slid through the hole they made in the rockwall, but shortly after, an aftershock hits and Toby rolled his right ankle, while Walter has twisted his left knee. Due to their injuries they're moving slower, and won't make it in time, so Toby ties their legs together to alleviate pressure. However, to have a cadence, they must sing a song aloud. They arrive under Koreatown, but the pipe has cracked, so the gas is venting. Toby wants to leave before they asphyxiate, but Walter tells him the gas is heading for downtown, where they overheard on a cop's radio earlier that several buildings were on fire.

Over the comms, as Walter and Toby head out, Walter tells the rest of the team to meet at Wilson and Morrel. Once Toby and Walter arrive there, Toby goes into a construction crane while Walter opens up a manhole. Toby uses the crane to position a shipping container on its side over the manhole, so it acts as a funnel. Happy, Cabe, and Paige arrive, and Cabe lights and throws an atlatal made by Happy into the container, so the gas is set on fire so it will not reach downtown. Later, Walter goes to Toby's apartment to apologize and suggests they continue the therapy. Toby confesses he has never been happier, and so he is sabotaging himself, after all what is more sabotaging than arguing with your boss? Walter invites him to go get food, but Toby lies and says he is tired, then shuts the door. Happy is there in a robe, and asks if he's truly never been happier. They then kiss.

It Isn't the Fall That Kills YouEdit

Toby, Sylvester, and Walter meditating guided by a voice recording. When the voice says: 'Inhale through your feet and exhale through your crown' Toby comments: 'A biological impossibility'. Sylvester points out that the instruction of the voice ('hold breath for 3 seconds') is not even accurate (2.38 seconds). Toby comments that the exercise was supposed to be about relaxation. Sylvester agrees and resets the recording. Unfortunately the session is cut short when Paige and Tim arrive asking their help to settle an argument. Walter walks away saying he has something to work on, and Toby follows.

Walter in front of a whiteboard, telling Toby that it is their garage floor plan where he's tracking the daily movements of Paige. Walter explains that he has designated 'P' for 'Paige'. Toby then asks about Tim, and Walter replies that he has used 'I' for 'interloper'. Walter further explains that the exclamation points are areas where him and Paige cross paths -- and goes for more detail explaining a previous interaction Paige had with Tim with the duration (8 minutes and 36 seconds) and a better way to position himself to keep an eye on them. After hearing more about the detail Walter put in his diagram along with explanations, Toby casually points out that some behaviorists (including himself) might say that Walter investing his time in something like that would drive him crazy --- Walter shoots back and tells Toby that he is doing the same thing with Happy.

Toby claims that he isn't avoiding the situation, just because he's stopped hounding Happy. As proof, he shows Walter the screen of his phone explaining that it's a dossier of suspects (Happy's husband). One person in particular catches Walter's eye (Ray), and Toby says that Ray was in their lives and might be commitmet phobic. Toby then compares what he's doing (action) to what Walter's doing (avoidance). The discussion is cut short when Paige enters saying Richard Elia is downstairs with a job. They both join the others to listen to him explain that his company has its first manned space launch in three days, saying that it is important for them to meet the deadline because they'll lose their next round of funding --- due to their contract being given out to competitors.

Once at the facility, Toby is at the main control room with Sly feeding information to Happy and Walter who are running diagnostic tests to find the flaw in the design. After listening to Sly ask Richard about the services they are providing to NASA, Toby pipes in with a 'Space Uber' comparison. Richard also says that its all about pushing the boundaries of space exploration, sending someone to Mars...or a while colony. Toby also notes the news van outside as press for Richard company --- Richard then spins this as a good thing for Scorpion as well as long as they could get everything going.

After hearing from Walter what went wrong (redundant valves), Richard asks if Greek food is okay and Toby notices Paige and Tim's banter about watching Greek films. Happy is heard on comms asking Sly about the weather on radar, and Sly relays that there is a storm coming in. The team tries to contact Walter, and Toby knows that Walter knows his comms has been turned off -- and using the term 'Triple A'. Happy confirms that she'll be heading out to get him. She is halfway there when the rocket is struck by lightning and wreaks havoc to the system and putting it into starting the launch sequence.

Sly mentioned that the lightning strike has disabled any remote communication to the rocke. After Toby asks if Walter could do it at his end, Sly says that it is not likely as the lightning struck the open circuit Walter was working on which resulted in the system getting fried. They see on one of the security cameras Walter closing the door, and Toby mentions the effects (three times his body weight) to Walter once he launches with the rocket.

Walter ends up in outer space and eventually due to low oxygen, he hallucinates. Toby (and the rest of the team) is able to hear and see, what Walter is saying and doing --- knowing that he sees Paige with him. Toby later speaks to Paige to let Walter get over her, and not ask questions about what he remembers while he was in space. Walter approaches Toby working on the computer still on the search for Happy's mystery husband.
